Badlands Botanical Fragrance

Regular price $60.00

Dry Desert Air, Juniper, Horse Sweat, Old Leather, & Sagebrush.

Badlands is an olfactory ode to one of Oregon's wildest places: a vast stretch of scrubby desert full of gnarled and lightning-struck juniper trees, unruly sagebrush, ancient volcanic riverbeds, and dust, dust, dust. Smokey, dry, and herbal, this blend is made from petrichor, juniper berries, an infusion of Lapsang Souchong, and Artemisia Tridentata (wild/great basin/big sagebrush).

If you're not familiar with wild sagebrush, its fragrance is very different from super camphorous white ("sacred”) sage. This variety is hay-like and dirty, with notes of oiled musty leather. Imagine the scent of sitting in an old sweat-soaked saddle, riding a horse languidly through a charred and barren landscape. After the thin herbal notes of sagebrush and juniper berries have dried down, you'll catch a dark waft of powdery smoke that lingers like the smoldering ashes of old trees victimized by desert wildfire.

This scent is a labor of love. I use a combination of sagebrush essential oil that I purchase from an ethical purveyor, as well as oil that I distill in my copper alembic still (see photos), in my home in Oregon. One of my favorite things about Badlands is that it changes from batch to batch depending on where in Central and Eastern Oregon I source the sagebrush. Each generation of Badlands is completely different.

Please note that I don't offer exchanges or refunds, so you may want to purchase a trial size first to be sure you like this fragrance!

These atomizers offer a generous spray that creates a wide and soft mist. For maximum longevity, try applying to clothing and hair.
